Semarang – Diponegoro University held a national seminar to disseminate achievements of the ministry of research, technology and higher education between 2014 and 2018.

The ministry have been trying to improve Indonesia’s competitiveness over the said period. One of the strategies is to boost the number of Indonesia’s scientific publications in international journals and support the creation of local-made innovation produce.

Minister for research, technology and higher education Mohamad Nasir said he was upbeat that Indonesia could become “leader” in Southeast Asia in terms of the number of scientific publications in 2019.

SCOPUS data showed, as of November 28, Indonesia’s papers in international journals reached 24,883, far over Singapore’s 19,767 and Thailand’s 15,018.

“Our figure is still below Malaysia’s. Nevertheless, we are optimistic that we could close the gap or even be the leader in ASEAN,” said Nasir at the seminar.

The ministry has laid out some plans to meet the target, such as increasing the budget for research. Nasir said Indonesia’s figure surpassed that of Thailand and Singapore in 2017 because of a better-managed system.

The ministry, moreover, has several programs to nurture businessmen and to support innovation at universities and the society.

Nasir also told the event about innovation products from university students, such as bionic hand robot and plasma-based technology in agriculture from Diponegoro University.

The ministry also endows scholarships to students from low-income families, such as the Higher Education Affirmative Program (Adik) for students from Papua, West Papua and regions that are considered as impoverished.

Diponegoro rector Yos Johan Utama said the university always supported the ministry in its efforts to boost Indonesia’s competitiveness.

Also present at the event were ministry’s director general for research and development strengthening Muhammad Dimyati, ministry’s public cooperation and communication bureau head Nada Marsudi, LLDikti Region VI head Dwi yuwono Puji Sugiharto, university rectors and students from all over Central Java.
