Surabaya Institute of Technology’s (ITS) chem-e-car team Spektronics has won two awards at the international level. They were “The Best Video” and “The Most Outstanding AIChE Student Chapter” at the 2018 American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Competition in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the US, between October 26 and 28.

It meant that the team was a consecutive winner for The Best Video, having won the award also last year. The team said it had to work very hard to produce a video which illustrated four important factor. They were team factor, trial, teamwork and technical preparation in every chem-e-car competition.

The team closely paid attention to every detail in the video. That was because the grand jury scored based on the said four factors. “So it can be said that our video has all of the four factors and it also shows Spektronics’ character,” said ITS’ chemical engineering department head Juwari ST, M.Eng., PhD, in a telephone interview on October 29.

The ITS’ Spektronics comprised of Miftahul Hadi, Afif Al Arif, Ronald Pakpahan, Widi Citra L, Rifqy Furtiansyah and Auzan Widhatama. They were directly supervised by Juwari.

At the same occasion, the team also grabbed the Most Outstanding AIChE Student Chapter category. Team advisor Juwari received the award from AIChE president Christine Seymour. “I represented other advisors like Fadlilatul Taufany, Ichan Nugraha and Putu Rama, who is the president of AIChE ITS chapter,” said Juwari.

The award was bestowed upon a student chapter that is active and consistent in participation, enthusiasm and program quality. Other indicators included professionalism and role in university as well as communities. “Thank God, this is all due to the hard work of the team. I hope this award could be a blessing for us,” said Juwari.

Meanwhile, at the prestigious race event, the team ranked 14th out of 40 finalist teams, which included groups from China, Qatar, Canada, Saudi Arabia, South Korea and other else. The team won the category last year but was unable to replicated its success at this year’s edition due to several technical problems during the competition. One of them was related to a box containing numerous equipment.

On behalf of the team, said Afif wanted to thank to ITS, Ikoma ITS, ITS’ chemical engineering sector, all advisers, sponsors and other parties that had assisted the team and its activities. (PUBLIC RELATIONS DIVISION OF ITS)
