SURABAYA – A robotics team from November 10th Technology Institute (ITS) in Surabaya has won an award in the Robocup Humanoid Soccer League held in Sydney, Australia, in July.

The team, which is called Ichiro, was placed 1st in a category named Teen Size Technical Challenge. The group also grabbed the 3rd place in two other categories, namely Robot Soccer Teen Size and Kid Size Technical Challenge.

Another ITS team called IRIS finished 5th in the Soccer Middle Size League.

Robocup Humanoid Soccer League was divided into three categories, based on the size of the competing robots, namely Kid Size, Teen Size and Adult Size.

Ichiro ITS leader Sulaiman Ali said the university delegated two teams to compete at the Teen Size and the Kid Size categories.

For the Teen Size category, Ichiro only brought two robots, while other countries brought more than three robots. This provided a more challenging competition for the Ichiro ITS team, said Ali.

“But the algorithm and ball detection system of Ichiro Teen Size robot are superior to robots of other teams,” said Ali.

Meanwhile the Kid Size category was competed by 16 teams from countries like France, Iran, Japan, the United Kingdom and Russia. What is great is the fact that three of the 16 teams were from Indonesia. One was from ITS and the other two groups were delegations from the Surabaya State Electronical Polytechnic (PENS) and the Batam State Polytechnic (Polibatam).

Muhtadi, the adviser to ITS’ robotics team, praised Ichiro’s accomplishments in the Australian competition, highlighting the three awards that it grabbed there.
