BANDUNG – Indonesians use bicycle frequently, either for sport or transportation. In major cities like Bandung, cycling has also become a lifestyle. There are many technological features that can be used while cycling for sport. Some of them include heart rate counter, calories counter and GPS for maps.

The progress of Internet of Things (IoT) has also contributed to a better cycling experience. Having learned about the need of cyclers for data and strong internet connection, the IoT and Digital Economy Development Laboratory from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) is now developing a start-up company called Garuda Bike.

Garuda Bike has a bike sharing program which combines various IoT features such as GPS, automatic system and alarm. Its bikes are used in special areas like universities and bike-only areas. So far the bike use is limited to areas reachable by a Wi-Fi and a server which gathers bikers’ cycling activities in the form of Big Data.

The Big Data will then be analyzed to obtain various predictions related to health, patterns of people’s activities, air pollution level and even natural disasters.

Taufiqurrahman Akmal is Garuda Bike’s program manager. He says that the firm is developing three censors for each of the bike: log, GPS and alarm. These features gather multiple data variables such as people’s exercise frequency, cycling tracks and air pollution level.

“Garuda Bike is doing activities in three steps, which are sensing, understanding and acting. We use the censors, analyze the data and then we can comprehend them. The results can benefit us in many ways. For example, we could know areas frequently passed by cyclers and areas with big concentration of people that could potentially become food and beverage business locations,” said Taufiqurrahman when interviewed at the ITB’s laboratory recently.

Garuda Bike is teaming up with Bandung’s transportation agency and Indosat to develop the network. The bikes will be tested within ITB’s compound.
