Minister for research, technology and higher education Mohamad Nasir has called on researchers and university professors to improve the quantity and the quality of scientific reports published on both national and international journals.

Indonesia now has 2,270 journals with national accreditation. It has been promoted that the number should amount to 8,000 journals.

Nasir last year signed a minister’s decree on scientific journal accreditation. The regulation requires accreditation agencies to be part of the ministry. After the issuance of this decree, it is hoped that the number of accredited journals would reach 7,000, themselves would be divided into six groups.

“All scientific journals accredited by LIPI and whose accreditation period has yet to expire would be recognized by the ministry until the period ends,” said Nasir at an event called “Geliat Arjuna” on February 22. The event gathered journal managers, accreditation bodies and policy makers.

Nasir said his ministry had issued new certificates for journals that had been accredited by LIPI, the Indonesian Science Agency. Application period for accreditation, according to the new decree, started on June 1, 2018. The registration period and the assessment period open full year. The results are to be announced every two months. The accreditation period itself is five years after the publication number is issued.

The ministry works with LIPI to help journals that encounter problem with publishing online through a facility called Indonesian e-journal home. It is free so journal managers no longer have to have their own servers, journal management application and IT expert staff.

The already registered 2,270 journals are divided into six categories of rankings: Sinta 1 to Sinta 6. Journals with score between 85 and 100 are grouped in the Sinta 1, those with score between 70 and 84 are in the Sinta 2, 60 to 69 in the Sinta 3, 50 to 59 in the Sinta 4, 40 to 49 in Sinta 5 and 30 to 39 in Sinta 6.

The ranking system is aimed at allowing officials and agencies to decide which journals they would choose in job promotion process.
