DENPASAR – Vice President Jusuf Kalla has told Indonesian scientists to keep learning about up-to-date technology from other countries in order to aid their country’s development.

Kalla said that in his remarks before nearly 2,000 scientific stakeholders attending the 24thcommemoration of the National Technology Awakening day in Denpasar, Bali, August 28, 2019.

In developing new technologies, scientists do not need to be “ashamed” of learning fresh technologies from other countries, said Kalla.

“Take a look at China which has quickly improved its technology. First, they copied [from other countries’ examples]. Second, they improved [existing technologies]. Third,  they innovate. Those were not only done by China but also by Japan,” said Kalla.

“There is no country that was born well-developed.”

On the same occasion, research, technology and higher education minister Mohamad Nasir told universities to develop science techno parks where innovation and research projects aimed at helping the society could be done.

An example of invention from science techno park is a steam cell research from Airlangga University. The research outcomes were the basis of mass production by PT Phapros, a subsidiary of state-owned pharmacy firm PT Kimia Farma.
