Makassar – Ministry of Research and Technology/National Agency for Research and Innovation started to rapidly build the ecosystems for research and innovation in Indonesia, in achieving the Superior Human Resources toward the Advanced Indonesia.

One of the steps is by holding The Second (2nd) High Level Meeting on STHE Cooperation & The 11th Joint Working Group on HERIE in the Prof DR H Baharuddin Lopa SH Auditorium, Faculty of Law, Hasanuddin University Makassar, on Thursday (31/10).

Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Brodjonegoro appreciated the meeting to strengthen the partnership on higher education, research, innovation, and entrepreneurship which has been established to date.

“It is extremely important to maintain the partnership between two countries, Indonesia and France. Indonesia is highly committed to this collaboration. I am sure we could be better and stronger,” said him.

Minister Bambang stated that to improve the research quality in Indonesia, Indonesia will have to learn and cooperate with the researchers especially from countries with relatively advanced researches. French universities and research technology innovation center likewise, which already has research traditions to produce various strong innovation products. Therefore the JWG regarding the Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship between Indonesia and France was held for the 11th time.

“We hope Indonesian scientists and academicians could be collaborating with French scientists and academicians, so we could improve our research quality. As well as French researchers and innovators. So that it could increase the collaborations. In the end we hope Indonesian research quality would be world class researches. We also hope for the researchers in Indonesia to not stop only at the basic researches and application researches, but also to try go be innovators and inventors,” he said.

Minister Bambang stated that the partnership between Indonesian and French researches includes global fields, especially the one focused on several topics of science and technology such as maritime, agriculture and food, energy, transportation, health, information and communication technologies (ICT), defense technology, as well as social humanities and other topics.

“We will be focusing more onto research climate which has to be stronger between institutions and universities R&D in Indonesia,” said Minister Bambang.

Furthermore, Minister Bambang encourage the partnership in entrepreneurship. According to him, the higher research quality will make the innovation products become more competitive to be able to compete in global market. “Our products are not competitive in global market yet because there is no innovation. Lack of innovation, because of less research quality. I hope this meeting produce values and could be applied into our products to be more competitive,” he said.

Minister Bambang explained that the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Agency for Research and Innovation is currently working hard on establishing research and innovation ecosystem in Indonesia. One of them is the new research system to establish the National Agency for Research and Innovation. The focus should be on the integration of researches from upstream to downstream, from basic research to innovations and product commercializations.

“Later the National Agency for Research and Innovation will be the one directing the integration of the researches,” said Minister Bambang.

Currently the researches could be considered less optimal and has a tendency to be conducted individually or independently. Research, technology, and innovation are not only conducted in the universities, but also in the non ministry government institutions and other R&D institutions under other technical ministries. This allows the research duplications if these matters are not addressed immediately.

“With the National Agency for Research and Innovation we hope there will be no more research duplications. There were many researchers from anywhere. That will be the matter we will manage in the National Agency for Research and Innovation. The purpose would be to create integration of researches from upstream to downstream,” said Minister Bambang.

French Ambassador Olivier Chambard stated that his parties are open to collaborate with Indonesia, especially in the research, innovation, higher education, and entrepreneurship. Moreover Indonesia specifically under the second term of President Joko Widodo is focusing to develop Superior Human Resources and Global Talents.

“It is an honor to be in Makassar to be in this meeting. We ade open to collaborate in research and innovation. Including with the students. We are ready to accept researchers from Indonesia,” he said.

French Ambassador mentioned several on-going collaboration, including the Nusantara program which is a research collaboration between Indonesia and France, and other collaborations.

Meanwhile, Hasanuddin University Rector Dwia Aries Tina Pulubuhu expressed her gratitude for the support and trust in choosing Hasanuddin University as host in the meeting.

“I believe this meeting will produce ideas. We need to strengthen our research and entrepreneurship, and learn how to collaborate and strengthen our networking in the future, especially in the new era of industry 4.0,” she said.

Also attending the meeting are the Director General of Innovation Development Jumain Appe, Director General for Research and Development Strengthening Muhammad Dimyati, Head of Partnership and Public Communication Bureau
Nada DS Marsudi, Head of Science and Technology Research Center Sri Setiawati, Director Bunyamin Maftuh, Director for Research and Community Service Ocky Karna Radjasa, Colonel Arwin Datumaya AI Expert TNI AU, Ophir Sumule Hasanuddin University, along with the delegations, academicians, and researchers from both countries.
