JAKARTA – The ministry of research, technology and higher education announced Friday (16/8) the Indonesian university rankings for 2019 at its office in Senayan, Jakarta.

In the rankings, the ministry has divided Indonesian universities into a number of clusters. Through this method, the ministry aims to improve the quality of the universities by issuing cluster-based policies.

“We want to push Indonesian universities forward and become world-class,” said minister of research, technology and higher education Mohamad Nasir when announcing the rankings.

The ministry has talked to President Joko Widodo and the finance ministry about the creation of an endowment fund to support research activities in Indonesia’s best universities.

“I have asked Rp 10 trillion for the first phase. This is meant to push our universities to become more competitive,” said Nasir.

Nasir said both state and private universities had been equally assessed, adding that there was no dichotomy  between them.

The ministry released rankings for academic universities and vocational higher institutions.
