Jakarta – Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro has been officially appointed as the Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation since 23 October 2019, for the period of 2019-2024, replacing the 2014-2019 Minister for Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir.

On his first speech, Bambang stated that the Ministry of Research and Technology will be carrying out two important agendas, which are synergizing several Higher Education programs with the Ministry of Education and Culture, and building the National Agency for Research and Innovation Agency in accordance with what are mandated in the National System of Science and Technology Bill.

“The Government wanted the National Agency for Research and Innovation Agency to be established because President Joko Widodo stated on his speech that he did not want the research, development, assessment, and application activities in each institution—not only in the Non-Ministry Government Institutions under MORT coordination, but also in the coordination with other Ministries/Institutions—to have the tendency to carry out their own activities,” said the new Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro.

This was stated on the Handover of the 2014-2019 Minister for Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir to the 2019-2024 Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro, on Wednesday(23/10) in the Building D Auditorium of MORTHE, Jakarta.

Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation Bambang Brodjonegoro then explained that individual and independent research and development will only make the research budget which is low in the nominal become ineffective, because will be divided into even smaller nominal for each researcher.

“Due to the budget constraints, the research quality would be limited, not because of the quality of the researchers, but because of the limited funding which has to be divided into large numbers,” said Minister Bambang.

In the 100 days program of the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Agency for Research and Innovation, Minister Bambang stated that he will be focusing on the programs, structure, and implementation of National Agency for Research and Innovation, as well as synergizing the higher education programs with the Ministry of Education and Culture.

“I will have to meet Mr. Nadiem (Minister for Education and Culture) to discuss the best transition, because I don’t want to waste time only for bureaucratic administrative tasks. I need us to put the best efforts in the coordination to finish our homeworks together. On the one hand we need to establish the National Agency for Research and Innovation and returning organizational matters of higher education to the Ministry of Education and Culture, and on the other hand we need to keep chasing our agendas of research and innovation for the Ministry of Research and Technology. I hope we can all work together to achieve that,” said Minister Bambang.

Before becoming the Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation, Bambang Brodjonegoro had been appointed as Indonesian Minister twice. Being an alumni of Economic Faculty from University of Indonesia and a Professor, Bambang had been appointed as Minister for Finance from 2014 to 2016 and Minister for National Development Planning/Chairman of National Development Planning Agency from 2016 to 2019.

On the handover ceremony, the 2014-2019 Minister for Research, Technology, and Higher Education Mohamad Nasir congratulate Bambang Brodjonegoro as his successor and he is optimistic that Minister Bambang already has deep knowledge about the National System of Science and Technology Bill, National Research Masterplan, and the National Agency for Research and Innovation.

“He was one of the pioneers of the establishment of the National Agency for Research and Innovation and other matters related to the Laws and Presidential Decrees regarding to the National Research Masterplan,” said Mohamad Nasir.

Nasir hoped the new Minister could reach his aims of bigger budget for Indonesian researches and more directed according to the nation’s needs.

“I hope the National Agency for Research and Innovation will integrate all researches in Indonesia. This was my dream. With the National System of Science and Technology Bill, I hope the research integration would be successfully realized by Minister Bambang according to the Law no. 11 of 2019 on Research Integration,” said Mohamad Nasir.
